News from Wordwide FX Financial Translations: today we launch our new website in Greek!
After a series of technical upgrades, we were really looking forward to having the site in Greek, or Hellenic, as a courtesy to the many Greek speakers involved in the financial industry. Greek is the native language of 13 million people in Greece and Cyprus, where it is the official tongue, and it is also spoken in Albania, Hungary, Germany, and many other countries. Greek is also one of the official languages of the European Union.
Belonging to Indo-European branch of languages, Greek has been spoken since around the 3rd millennium BC, and, therefore, is one of the oldest languages spoken today. In fact, it is considered the world's oldest recorded living language since, Linear B, the earliest script used to write Greek, is attested as early as the late 15th century. Greek holds an important place in the ancient history of many European countries, since it was a widely spoken lingua franca in the Mediterranean world and beyond. Modern Greek, also called Neo Hellenic, derives from Medieval Greek and can be traced back to the Byzantine period, as early as the 11th century. The influence of Greek can be seen in many European languages such as Spanish or Italian, that borrowed many Greek words especially into the fields of science and medicine.
Greek has used an alphabet similar to the one we know today since the 9th century BC. It sprung from the Phoenician alphabet, and the variant in use today can be traced back at least to 403 BC. Its influence can be seen in the Latin alphabet.
