Bitcoin steadies despite political and crypto-specific headwinds

Bitcoin climbed back above $78,000 on Wednesday after a volatile reaction to the US midterm elections that handed Democrats control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The original cryptocurrency briefly fell below $76,000, touching a seven-week low alongside other risk assets, before recovering as investors reassessed the implications of the result and political uncertainty began to ease.

The election outcome initially weighed on sentiment amid concerns that Democratic control of Congress could prove less supportive for the crypto industry. Over the past two years, digital assets benefited from a relatively friendly policy backdrop, including a federal stablecoin framework and efforts to advance broader crypto-market reforms. Investors now fear legislative priorities could shift toward greater oversight and investigations, potentially slowing progress on industry-backed initiatives such as the stalled market structure bill, the Clarity Act.

As a result, the election is being viewed as a potential headwind for an industry that has long pushed for greater regulatory clarity and faster deregulation. However, markets also recognize the practical limits of major policy changes. US President Donald Trump retains veto power, reducing the likelihood of sweeping legislative shifts and helping ease some of the initial anxiety. Meanwhile, the election outcome contributed to a weaker US dollar and lower Treasury yields, both of which are traditionally supportive for risk-sensitive assets such as Bitcoin, helping the cryptocurrency recover from its post-election lows.

Binance hack remains an overhang

Still, the election uncertainty comes at an already vulnerable moment for the crypto market. Bitcoin fell more than 7% in October, snapping a three-month winning streak, before sentiment was further tested by the $6.3 billion Binance hack on October 30, the largest theft in the history of the digital-asset industry. The FBI attributed the attack to North Korea's TraderTraitor hacking group, while investigators said the stolen funds were rapidly converted into Ethereum and moved through various channels in an apparent laundering effort. The scale of the breach highlighted growing cyber risks facing digital-asset platforms and dented confidence in the sector's security infrastructure.

However, Binance says it has replenished approximately 95% of affected assets, restored withdrawals and committed to absorbing customer losses. The exchange has also reported stabilizing conditions, with deposits beginning to exceed withdrawals after an initial wave of redemptions. While the market fallout has remained relatively contained, the incident has reinforced concerns over security, custody risk and investor confidence, leaving sentiment fragile even as prices recover.

ETF outflows signal ongoing caution

The lingering caution is most evident among institutional investors. Despite Bitcoin's rebound, nearly $1.2 billion flowed out of US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs between Friday and Tuesday as markets navigated both the election uncertainty and the aftermath of the Binance hack. Bitcoin also remains roughly 4% below last Thursday's pre-hack high, suggesting confidence has yet to fully recover.

Options markets tell a similar story, with demand for downside protection remaining elevated as traders increasingly favour protective puts amid concerns over the regulatory outlook and broader macroeconomic conditions. Together, ETF outflows and defensive options positioning suggest investors remain reluctant to rebuild exposure until there is greater clarity on regulation, interest rates and broader market conditions.

Technical picture remains constructive

From a technical perspective, Bitcoin's recovery above $78,000 has eased immediate downside pressure. The cryptocurrency successfully defended support in the $75,000-$76,500 region, an area closely watched by traders following the post-election selloff. The next major test lies near $80,000. A sustained break above that level would strengthen the case for a broader recovery, while a renewed move below $75,000 could expose Bitcoin's most important long-term support zone, the 200-week simple moving average near $67,700.
